The Prophet Isaiah
 | In Old Testament times, God spoke to the Jews through his prophets. Prophets had a special relationship with God and passed along His Word to the people of Israel. The greatest prophet was Isaiah. He lived a very long time and was a faithful servant of God who wrote many of his prophecies in beautiful poetry. Isaiah did his work during the reigns of 4 kings. The first king was Uzziah. Uzziah started out being a very good king and listened to what Isaiah had to say. Eventually he decided he was too important to listen to God or His prophet Isaiah. Bad things happend to Uzziah. He became a leper and spent the rest of his life all alone, but he ruled Israel for over 60 years. King Uziah's son Jotham took over when Uzziah died. He was a very good king who reigned for seventeen years. King Jotham's son was only 20 years old when he became king. Ahaz was pig-headed and stubborn and had no time for Isaiah or the Jewish God. Eleven of the twelve tribes of Israel were taken into captivity by the Assyrians, mostly because Ahaz was a coward. The tribe of Judah and the city of Jerusalem were allowed to continue only after Ahaz agreed to pay a large sum (called a tribute) to Assyria every year. He ruled only fifteen years, and died when he was just 35 years old. The next king was Hezekiah. He was a great king. He restored Judah's worship of the one true God and the kingdom prospered. He built up the walls of Jerusalem and then told Assyria that his country would no longer pay a tribute. This angered the Assyrian king and eventually his powerful army marched on Jerusalem. Hezekiah knew his army wasn't big or strong enough to defeat the Assyrians and was worried he'd made a big mistake. The king asked Isaiah to pray to God for help. . God answered this good king's prayers. Isaiah told King Hezekiah that God didn't want him to worry; He would handle things. And that's exactly what God did! A terrible sickness befell the Assyrian army and it left Judah without attacking anyone! The people of Judah were blessed because of Hezekiah's faith, and the king knew as never before that Isaiah was a great and true prophet. | |
