In Egypt, Joseph started out a slave but he earned Potiphar's trust and eventually was in charge of his entire household. Unfortunately, Potiphar's wife didn't like the way Joseph did things and told lies about how he was handling affairs to Potiphar.  Potiphar had Joseph put in jail!

The warden of the jail soon came to see that Joseph was a responsible and honest man, and put him in charge of all the prisoners.  Two of the Pharaoh's servants were put in jail, and one night they each had a dream.  Joseph was already known as someone who could figure out what dreams meant.  He told the Pharaoh's cupbearer that he would soon be free.  Joseph asked him to tell the Pharaoh about him, in the hopes that the Pharaoh would release Joseph from jail. 

The cupbearer forgot all about this request until the Pharaoh had a dream.  He had Joseph brought to the Pharaoh.

Joseph understood the meaning of the dream.  He told Pharaoh that seven years of famine were coming, but seven good years would come first.  It would be important to save a little of the harvest each year to get the people through the bad ones.

Pharaoh was impressed, and made Joseph governor of all Egypt, in charge of all the food stores!  Pharoah gave him a new Egyptian name, Zaphenath-Paneah, and a wife.  They had two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, and Joseph gave them both names that honored God.

During the seven years of good crops, Joseph was able to fill the warehouses of Egypt so that when the seven bad years came, Egyptians did not suffer. People from all over the world came to buy grain from Joseph!
